About the artist

“Ten years ago I moved from the city to the country and was inspired by all the birds that visited my new garden. As I watched and drew them, I grew more interested in identifying the species and watching their different behaviours. I was using bird guides for identification and became interested in how “birders” use silhouettes and the bird's behaviour/movement to identify them rather than necessarily the colours. My work moved from trying to capture the colour and flurry of activity at the feeder to focusing on capturing a sense of them. I have simplified their environment to concentrate on the birds and ensure they are identifiable by their shape and posture.

Now 10 years on; I still love watching their movement, and still enjoy working out how to depict them in silhouette form and capturing their essence. I have developed my techniques for achieving a layering of the movement and capturing a sense of the bird’s movements. I continue to experiment with different formats, layouts and looking at the environment as well as the bird.”

Sandra Vick studied at Edinburgh College of Art; graduating with honours, winning awards and a scholarship for further study at Masters's level. She graduated with a Masters in Fine Art in 2009.
Her work has been exhibited throughout the UK and is held in private collections worldwide.
