About the artist

Born in 1948 in Maryhill, Glasgow, John is one of Scotland’s most loved and collected artists. From an early age, he showed a talent for art. Inspired by his family - particularly his grandfather Henry Lowrie, a brilliant water-colourist - and encouraged by his mother, he attended Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1971 with a sell-out degree show. Spending a further two years at college to gain a diploma, he began teaching at Lochgilphead High School in Argyll in 1973 until 1997, when he left education to paint full time.

As well as being a successful artist, John and his wife Maureen are patrons of the Princess Royal Trust for Carers. John also contributes substantially to Scotland’s up-and-coming artists with the Jolomo Foundation Awards, recognising and aiding our next generation of landscape artists. John’s work has collected the world over – from welders and nurses to Madonna and Sting – with solo shows exhibiting in Glasgow, London, Crieff, Hong Kong, Edinburgh and New York to name but a few.
